Safer Prescribing of Opioids after Trauma and Surgery (SPOTS) Live Series

Series Overview

The SCRTAC, SCWIHERC, UW Health, and the Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin (SCW) are working together through the Department of Surgery to deliver a telementoring program that supports best practices in opioid prescribing. Most opioid naïve patients receive their first dose of opioids in conjunction with a medical procedure, and surgery and traumatic injuries are among the most common indications for a first prescription of opioid pain medications. Addressing surgeon and emergency medicine prescribing practices will allow us to reduce opioid supply and first exposures to opioids.

Intended Audience

MD, DO, Specific Physician Specialists, RN, APRN, LPN, Specific RN Specialists, Physician Assistants, Healthcare professionals who prescribe opioids and their teams.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Implement up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines for opioid prescribing for acute pain to advance guideline-concordant care within health systems.
  2. Identify and encourage the spread of opioid-related emergency health system innovations.
  3. Collaborate with clinical specialty collaboratives (e.g., surgical collaboratives) in developing dashboards, reports, and other methods for providing feedback to providers on opioid prescribing, offering clinical decision support tools to improve the prescribing behavior, and evaluating efforts.
