Intended Audience
The Essentials in Education Module Series is intended for interprofessional health science faculty and staff who are interested in growing their skills and knowledge in the domains of teaching and learning. Some examples may not align with your specific professional learning climate, though all can be adapted to your and your learners’ contexts.
Learning Objectives for this Overcoming Barriers to Clinical Teaching module
As a result of participation in this educational activity participants will:
- Discuss barriers to clinical teaching within busy clinical settings
- Outline strategies to navigate clinical teaching challenges to effectively teach in busy clinical settings, including:
- WHEN to find time?
- WHO are our learners?
- WHAT should we teach?
- HOW do we teach effectively in a busy clinical setting?
- WHY is this so hard sometimes?
- Apply the One-Minute Preceptor model and its five microskills (getting a commitment, probing for supporting evidence, teaching general rules, reinforcing what was done well, and correcting mistakes) during clinical teaching to provide efficient and targeted feedback.
- Describe WHY you or your learner may not be feeling motivated in teaching and learning and how to accordingly adjust clinical teaching.
- Create a plan for when you will try out 1-2 new strategies in your clinical teaching.
This module is part of UWSMPH Office of Faculty Affairs and Development’s Education Essentials online modular curriculum: a collection of modules aimed at developing foundational skills important for all teachers—across professions, specialties, and settings in health science education. The goal is to support all health science teachers to Reflect, Learn, Plan, and Practice to deepen expertise in an ongoing cycle and grow our UWSMPH educator community.
