Education Essentials
Education Essentials is a collection of modules aimed at developing key skills for all interprofessional health science teachers, in various teaching settings. How modules are utilized is flexible–one or more modules to all of them–to meet the various needs of our teachers based on their activities, schedules, and priorities.
As seen in the above figure, this Education Essentials professional development curriculum broadly includes the areas of:
1) Growth as an Educator
2) Inclusive Teaching
3) Teaching & Learning Design
4) Teaching & Learning Strategies
5) Assessment, Evaluation, & Feedback
In addition, four curricular threads are woven throughout each of the nine module, and include the important teaching aspects of: self-reflection, growth mindset, supporting diversity, and learning theory and science.

Essentials in Education Curriculum
As a result of participation in these educational activities, members of the healthcare team will:
- Identify specific areas to grow teaching skills
- Plan specific next steps in professional development and networking to further develop teaching skills
- Discuss practices which foster an inclusive and effective learning climate
- Practice essential first steps in development of teaching activities
- Develop a step-wise approach to planning teaching activities to maximize learning
- Identify strategies to optimize teaching during or around tasks, procedures, and/or clinical work
- Create plans to harness active-learning in class and virtual teaching sessions
- Describe steps to give effective verbal formative feedback
- Identify basic approaches to assess teaching and learning
Target Audience
The Essentials in Education Module Series is intended for interprofessional health science faculty and staff who are interested in growing their skills and knowledge in the domains of teaching and learning.
With this course, the UWSMPH Office of Faculty Affairs and Development aims to support our health science teachers in a continuous learning and development cycle–based on Kolb’s experiential learning cycle–to build on expertise in teaching across their careers. In addition, each module in this curriculum employs components of the development cycle: Learn, Plan, Practice, and Reflect as outlined in the overview of each module.
