Patient and Family Communication

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course explores strategies to improve communication between patients/families and healthcare providers. The case-driven format allows for high learner engagement more likely to result in sustained change. Wrapping the module within the context of a social learning community simulates network that occurs in the live setting improving the learning impact across the interprofessional team. Learning resources including articles and handouts will be available to learners to reinforce learning and change.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE

In addition to knowledge, this activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal skills and communication. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competencies of roles and responsibilities and interprofessional communication. 

PRACTICE GAPS AND NEEDS

Multiple studies suggest that childhood and adolescent obesity increases the likelihood of adult diseases and mortality and that an effective approach to improving health outcomes is to address obesity prevention and treatment in childhood. All members of the healthcare team need relevant training regarding practical approaches to obesity prevention and management that are based on emerging evidence and clinical practice guidelines. 

Intended Audience

This activity was planned by and for physicians, nurses, clinical dietitians, and others who care for pediatric patients and are interested in improving outcomes through effective communication techniques with patients and their families.

  • Recognize opportunities for identifying and addressing weight management and obesity prevention
  • Identify patient and family readiness for change
  • Develop an approach specific to patient and family readiness for change
  • Assist patients and families in identifying reasons for, and obstacles to, change
