Hot Topics in Public Health — A Symposium Series: All the Lonely People: Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation - October 24, 2024
Overview
The "Hot Topics in Public Health" symposium series is a forum designed to provide up-to-date information on emerging issues in public health. The series adopts various formats for education, including panel discussions, scholarly presentations, and audience-based question-and-answer sessions. Hot topics are selected by a steering committee of public health professionals, population health researchers, and clinicians at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This session highlights the epidemic of loneliness and social isolation in the United States and provides background information on the health consequences of loneliness, tools for screening, and approaches to reduce loneliness.
In this session, we will explore various aspects of loneliness and social isolation through a series of presentations from distinguished speakers. Mary Henningfield, PhD, Scientist II in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, will discuss "Screening for Loneliness in Primary Care." Alexis Eastman, MD, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, will present on "Loneliness and Social Isolation in Elders." Traci Gaydos, MFA, CMP, Director of SMPH Signature Events, will cover "Intentional Planning to Reduce Isolation at Events." Lastly, John Beasley, MD, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, will address "Loneliness and Social Isolation in Clinicians: The Role of Changing Expectations, EHR, and Approaches for Connection."
Following the presentations, there will be a Q&A session moderated by Jonathan Temte, MD, PhD, Associate Dean for Public Health and Community Engagement.
