Description:
As the opioid epidemic rages across the United States and awareness of substance use disorders grows within our culture, older adults living with substance use disorders remain underserved. Studies demonstrate that clinicians screen and treat older adults at a lower rate than younger adults and adolescents. This session aims to provide a review of the literature on opioid and alcohol use disorders in older adults, and include the following: review of epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment, focusing on management of acute withdrawal, treatment in recovery, complications that can arise for patients who have substance use disorders.
Speaker biographies:
Dr. Laurel Bessey is a board certified adult psychiatrist, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UWSMPH, and also serves as associate training director to the University of Wisconsin Psychiatry Residency. She has a special interest in geriatric psychiatry, has served as co-author on multiple publications and presentations related to geriatric psychiatry, and is also a Suboxone prescriber.
Dr. Jenny Tumba is a second-year resident in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin. She graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford in 2018 where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and was awarded the selective Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award for her work with underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students within Winnebago County in Illinois.
Dr. Rebecca Radue is a geriatric and general psychiatrist at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital where she works in Mental Health and the GRECC, and is also an adjunct professor with the Department of Psychiatry at UWSMPH. She has a special interest in older adults with substance use disorders and runs a specialty clinic for this population at the Madison VA.
