Parenting in Emergency Situations

Primary care providers field questions from families about how to parent effectively on a regular basis. This course will explore what to anticipate in terms of a child’s response to a crisis and how to adapt traditional answers to typical parenting questions in order to provide optimal support to families.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this educational session, learners will be able to:

  1. Provide recommendations for parent calls that are common in stressful times.
  2. Learn to coach parents on principles of effective parenting.
  3. Discuss helpful strategies for parenting in times of community crisis.

Jason Horowitz, PhD, LP, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He is the Director of the Child Psychology Postdoctoral Internship. He earned his PhD at Vanderbilt University, and completed a fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Horowitz has a clinical practice that focuses on children, adolescents, and families with diverse needs and diagnoses. He also provides clinical services as part of an outreach program in the Madison Public Schools.
