Nutrition During Family Emergencies
Maintaining a healthy nutrition plan can be a hard, and sometimes confusing, topic for families to tackle even under normal circumstances. Throw a community-based emergency into the mix that limits access to grocery shopping and other food markets and restaurants and the task seems impossible. Throughout this interactive course, primary care teams will review evidence-based data and strategies needed to support families’ efforts to maintain a healthy and nutritious lifestyle during times of crisis.
As a result of this educational activity, learners will be able to:
- Explore Health and Healthy Eating.
- Provide evidence-based responses to parents/families regarding nutrition-related questions.
- Describe a healthy meal and snack using evidence-informed principles for energy balance.
- Support your patients and their families with solid nutrition information during crises/emergencies.
Cassie Vanderwall, PhD, is a Manager of Nutrition and Health Programming at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Dr. Vanderwall is a food and nutrition expert who focuses on overall wellness in individuals and communities. She completed her PhD in Health Sciences at Rush University.
