Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the key patient, tear, and imaging factors that guide the decision between meniscus repair, partial meniscectomy, and nonoperative management.
  • Identify the meniscal tear patterns and zones (e.g., vertical longitudinal, bucket-handle, radial, root tears) most likely to benefit from repair versus resection.
  • Compare current intraoperative repair techniques (inside-out, outside-in, all-inside) and adjunctive biologic augmentation strategies, including their respective indications and technical pitfalls.
  • Summarize contemporary outcomes data on meniscus repair, including healing rates, failure predictors, and return-to-sport/activity benchmarks, to inform patient counseling and postoperative expectations.
  • Articulate the biomechanical rationale for repair-specific weight-bearing and bracing protocols in terms that support collaborative decision-making with physical therapy colleagues.
