Statement of Need
Neurological surgery is an area of medicine that requires exceptional precision. Surgical labs such as this course allow medical professionals the opportunity to practice skills in a risk-free environment. Participants will get the opportunity to study the intricacies of real anatomy. For many participants, this course will provide experience performing real surgery when they would not be permitted to practice on patients, providing them with a better framework for understanding the activities of the OR and the decisions of a surgeon.
Initial learning will take place with foundational case discussions. The cadaver lab provides a unique opportunity to apply knowledge to cadaver specimen anatomy and the skills needed to surgically correct pathophysiology. The unique anatomy and pathology of humans cannot be effectively replicated. The skills gained from detailed, planned cadaver study is the gold stand for learning real applications of medical knowledge and generating understanding and continued learning in practice.
Intended Audience
This activity is designed for Neurological Surgery and Orthopedics physicians, midlevel providers, residents, and researchers interested in improving patient outcomes, interprofessional teamwork, and gaining hands-on experience in spine surgery techniques.
Elements of Competence
This CE activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties' areas of practice-based learning and improvement, medical knowledge, and patient care and procedural skills.
This activity also focuses on the Interprofessional competencies of roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communcation, and teams/teamwork.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational, participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 areas of cervical and 3 areas on lumbar spine care improvement.
- Demonstrate appropriate anatomical landmarks for safe placement of FDA approved instrumentation.
- Identify 5 complications associated with spine approaches and 5 mechanisms to avoid them.

Conference Attire
Casual attire is appropriate for the Friday portion of this conference. Since meeting room temperatures and personal comfort levels vary, it is recommended that you bring a sweater or jacket to the educational activity. Saturday and Sunday are hands-on and held in our surgical skills lab, scrubs or similar attire are strongly recommended.

Driving Directions
From the East (Milwaukee/Waukesha): Take I-94 West. As you approach Madison, watch for Exit 4A LEFT toward Janesville. Take this LEFT exit, which will put you on I-39 South/I-90 East. Merge into the right lane and, after approximately 3.5 miles, take Exit 142A toward Madison. From Hwy 12/18, see the "FROM HWY 12/18" directions at the bottom of this list.
From the North (Wausau/Stevens Point): Take I-39/Hwy. 51 South. At Portage, I-39 merges into I-90/I-94. Continue until Exit 142A, which will put you on Hwy 12/18 heading west toward Madison. From Hwy 12/18, see the "FROM HWY 12/18" directions at the bottom of this list.
From the Northeast (Fond du Lac/Oshkosh/Appleton/Green Bay): Take Hwy 41 South to Hwy 151 South. As you approach Sun Prairie, watch for Exit 97A and merge into I-39 South/I-90 East toward Chicago/Milwaukee. Continue until Exit 142A, which will put you on Hwy 12/18 heading west toward Madison.
