Introduction to Motivational Interviewing - UW Health

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. With the use of modules and skill building, this course provides an Introduction to MI, followed by the Foundation and Four Processes of MI.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed for nurses, physician assistants, psychologists, social workers, and other health care professionals.

By participating in this activity learners will be able to:

  2. Summarize the Evidence for MI
  3. Describe the Spirit and Style of MI
  4. Identify the Four Processes of MI
  5. Apply OARS and Ask Offer Ask, the microskills of MI, at the basic level

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

The University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 1.0 ANCC contact hours.

ACE Designation Statement

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, the University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 enduring continuing education credits.

APA Credit

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibly for the content of the programs.

AAPA Credit

The University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs  (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 4/30/2022. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation
