UW Health Northern Illinois: Hematology Oncology Updates for Medical Professionals (2026)
Overview
Advances in hematology and oncology are rapidly changing patient care, introducing new therapies, screening strategies, and supportive care options that influence nearly every area of medicine. Yet many healthcare professionals outside these subspecialties struggle to keep pace with evolving evidence, complex treatment regimens, and emerging technologies that increasingly affect their patients. Primary care clinicians, hospitalists, emergency physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and specialists in fields such as cardiology, nephrology, surgery and palliative care often encounter patients with anemia, clotting disorders, new or recurrent cancers, or treatment-related complications. Staying current with the most important updates is critical to ensuring timely recognition, safe management, and effective coordination of care.
Over the past 12 months, major developments have occurred in cancer screening, targeted therapies, immuno-oncology, and the management of hematologic disorders. At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming diagnosis, treatment planning, and symptom management—offering new opportunities but also requiring new competencies in technology integration and ethics. Evidence is also evolving around the use of cannabis and other supportive therapies that bridge pharmacologic and psychosocial care domains. Compounding these challenges, clinician burnout and compassion fatigue remain prevalent across all disciplines, impacting both patient outcomes and professional well-being. The Hematology Oncology Updates for Medical Professionals Conference is designed to address these gaps by presenting only the most clinically relevant advances from the past year. Through concise, case-based, and evidence-informed sessions, participants from all specialties will gain practical insights to enhance collaboration, confidence, and the quality of care for patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions.
Intended Audience
This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists in primary and specialty care settings.
Learning Objectives
As a result of participation in this educational series, members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- Identify the most clinically significant hematology and oncology updates from the past 12 months that have cross-specialty relevance to patient care.
- Incorporate new evidence and best practices in the evaluation and management of common blood disorders, cancer screening, and treatment-related complications encountered in diverse clinical settings.
- Apply recent advances in cancer therapeutics, precision medicine, and survivorship care to improve coordination between oncology and non-oncology teams.
- Evaluate the practical applications of artificial intelligence and digital tools that enhance diagnosis, decision-making, and patient outcomes.
- Integrate updated evidence on supportive care—including cannabis, buprenorphine, and palliative approaches—to optimize symptom control and quality of life.
- Recognize contemporary trends in clinician well-being and implement strategies to strengthen resilience, teamwork, and professional fulfillment across the care continuum.
Elements of Competence
This activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of medical knowledge, employ evidence-based practice, and providing patient/person-centered care. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competencies of roles and responsibilities. Additionally, the activity is designed to address the following DEI competency: addressing health disparities.
