UW Health Northern Illinois: Hematology Oncology Updates for Medical Professionals

The Hematology Oncology Updates for Medical Professionals conference is a multidisciplinary event designed to facilitate collaboration among specialties and discuss the latest advances in oncologic research, genetic testing, and treatment protocols. The goal is to share insights and foster partnerships among hematologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to improve patient care now and in the future. Topics include benign hematology disorders, key indicators for hematologist referral, advances in bleeding and clotting disorders, managing antithrombotic and antiplatelet therapy perioperatively, managing hematological disorders during pregnancy, impact of alcohol, tobacco, and substance abuse on hematological health, navigating cancer screening protocols and guidelines, advances in breast cancer care, malignant hematology, emerging cancer therapies, cancer genetic testing, palliative care, and survivorship. This program is open to all medical professionals and aims to inspire collaboration while advancing evidence-based practices in hematology and oncology care.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists in primary and specialty care settings.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational series, members of the healthcare team will be able to: 

  1. Enhance the collaborative performance of interprofessional hematology/oncology care teams to optimize patient outcomes.
  2. Develop and implement effective patient screening approaches across diverse clinical settings
  3. Mitigate and manage treatment-related adverse events in patients with hematologic and oncologic disorders using evidence-based strategies.
  4. Apply updated treatment protocols and strategies for relevant chronic medical conditions based on the latest clinical guidelines.
  5. Implement effective communication strategies to improve engagement with patients and their families.

Elements of Competence 

This activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of medical knowledge, employ evidence-based practice, and providing patient/person-centered care. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competencies of roles and responsibilities. Additionally, the activity is designed to address the following DEI competency: addressing health disparities.
