Series Overview

"Updates: Maximizing Child Development in Primary Care" is a quarterly interprofessional series offered by the Waisman Center in partnership with the Wisconsin Chapter of the AAP. Sessions are designed to improve a participants’ ability to promote optimal development in the pediatric patients within their practices. Topics covered will include best practice standards related to early identification of autism and other developmental disabilities (ASD/DD), care coordination for children with ASD/DD, appropriate medical and community referrals after a developmental concern is identified, evidence-based treatments for children with ASD/DD, and strategies for effective communication with parents related to child development and developmental concerns/diagnoses. Each session will include a didactic portion followed by practical guidance and advice from a health care provider with experience putting the guidelines and recommendations into practice. Sessions will conclude with time for discussion and provide opportunity for participants to identify strategies for incorporating what they have learned into their own practices.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for MDs/DOs (specifically with regard to Family Practice and Pediatric Medicine specialists), RNs, APRNs, and Physician Assistants.

American Academy of PAs (AAPA) Credit Designation Statement


The University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 6/30/2022. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) 

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity and individual assessment of and feedback to the learner, enables the learner to earn up to 1 MOC points in the American Board of American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.

Participant completion information will be shared with the ABP through PARS. By recording your attendance at this event, you are giving UW-ICEP permission to share this information with ABP.

As a result of their participation in this educational series, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe best practices related to screening, referral, and care for children with or at risk of ASD/DD.
  2. Identify autism symptoms and signs of developmental delay in children.
  3. Make appropriate referrals when a developmental concern is identified in one of their patients.
  4. Coordinate the patient-centered care of their pediatric patients with or at risk of ASD/DD.
  5. Work with members of their healthcare team on implementation of changes within their clinics to align with developmental guidelines.
