Intended Audience
Practitioners who provide health care to people with mental illness/substance abuse disorders, obligated to address the nicotine addiction of their patients as part of their scope of practice, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, and mental health and substance abuse providers. Program Directors and Quality Improvement staff will also benefit from this activity, as they are obligated to adopt policies regarding the use of tobacco.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- List and describe the three dimensions that make up the comprehensive integration of tobacco dependence treatment
- Define the standards that should be met as part of evidence-based tobacco use treatment integration
- Illustrate the basic steps of integrating tobacco dependence treatment
- Identify how the tobacco dependence treatment integration process may be different depending on the treatment setting (level of care [inpatient, residential, day treatment, partial hospitalization, primary outpatient, outpatient, long term residential]; treatment for mental illness vs. substance use disorders; type of patient [gender, age])
- Describe and explain the importance of enforcing tobacco use policies
- Define the underlying principles that guide the development of strategies to enforce tobacco use policies
- Discuss specific strategies to support staff who use tobacco through the tobacco use policy implementation process
