Statement of Need and Purpose
The purpose of this workshop is to strengthen the competencies graduate clinical preceptors need to create meaningful clinical learning experiences and to mentor, guide, and coach students preparing for advanced clinical roles. Participants will build skills in promoting critical thinking, assessing student performance, delivering constructive feedback, and supporting learners across multiple domains of patient care. The workshop also develops preceptor competence in managing common challenges such as time constraints and working with disengaged, struggling or resistant students. Additional topics include adapting to diverse learning styles and supporting preceptor well-being and resilience. All content is designed for an interprofessional group of clinicians who precept graduate students across varied practice settings.
Advance practice provider (APP) training programs rely on high quality graduate clinical preceptors to provide real-world clinical experiences and socialize students to the role of the APP. Nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and physician training programs often do not include preceptor development. Many graduate clinical preceptors have never received formal preceptor training and feel deficient in their ability to set goals, create an adequate learning environment, provide feedback, and evaluate student performance in a busy clinic setting.
In the interest of enhancing interprofessional communication and collaboration, and based on interest from physician colleagues, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, this workshop continues to provide a forum to learn, enhance, grow, and challenge a wide range of preceptors from a variety of backgrounds, interests, and skill levels.
Intended Audience
This workshop is designed to meet the needs of nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physicians and other health care providers who precept graduate students in their clinical practice.
Elements of Competence
This educational activity is designed to change learner competence and focuses on the following competency areas:
- Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Nursing: Practice-based learning and improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Professionalism
- National Academy of Medicine (NAM)/Nursing: Employ evidence-based practice
- Social Impact and Belonging: Engage in Self-reflection and Value Culturally Centered Care
Learning Objectives
Following this workshop, learners will be able to:
- Select and apply at least two evidence-based strategies to facilitate critical thinking in graduate-level learners, demonstrating effective use through teaching examples or simulated interactions.
- Analyze and critique communication behaviors modeled by workshop faculty, identifying strengths and areas for improvement, and justify recommendations using principles of effective preceptor-learner communication.
- Develop and implement actionable strategies to address common precepting challenges and demonstrate effective problem-solving through scenario-based application.
- Integrate and demonstrate telemedicine-specific precepting strategies such as virtual patient assessment guidance, privacy considerations, and remote clinical coaching within simulated teaching encounters.
- Conduct a structured self-assessment of personal background, learning preferences, and potential biases and apply tailored strategies to create an inclusive learning environment that supports diverse learner needs.
- Apply evidence-based approaches to recognize, prevent and address moral distress in oneself and others, and demonstrate use of at least two well-being practices that sustain resilience in the preceptor role.
- Adapt precepting strategies to align with the scope, competencies, and role expectations of interprofessional learners, and demonstrate effective coaching that supports discipline-specific and team-based outcomes.
Successful Completion
Learners will participate in Lectures with Q&As and cased-based and small-group discussions that focus on real world experiences. Pre- and post-activity scenario-based tests and evaluations are required.
