TITLE: Sex-testing to Control Binary Sports Eligibility: Can It Be Both Feasible and Fair?

Learning Objectives:

 

  1. Discuss the general history of medical testing for eligibility to compete as a female in international sports competitions. 
  2. Describe pitfalls in attempting to define sex solely according to either physical appearance, chromosomes, or gonadal/reproductive anatomy. 
  3. Discuss challenges of distinguishing athletic advantage deriving from genetic disease vs. disorder vs. condition vs. variation vs. “natural” athletic advantage
  4. Compare arguments for and against the fairness of current rules that disqualify any person who is androgen-responsive  and has 46XY chromosomes from competing as a female.
