Objectives:

  1. Describe the time course and probabilistic nature of spontaneous recovery following recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury and apply this framework to patient counseling.
  2. Explain a two-stage model of RLN regeneration and discuss why severity of injury may be a more important determinant of recovery time than distance from the larynx.
  3. Discuss emerging frontiers in RLN injury treatment, including neuromodulation and regenerative approaches such as muscle progenitor cell therapy.
