Intended Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other faculty and staff affiliated with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and UW Health.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the prevalence and impact of chronic pain
  • Explain the differences between acute, cancer and chronic non-cancer pain and their implications
  • Appreciate and assess potential risks and harm associated with chronic opioid therapy
  • Explain when to initiate or continue opioids for chronic non-cancer pain
  • Describe criteria for safe opioid selection, dosing, and duration
  • List techniques for therapeutic opioid monitoring, risk reduction, discontinuation and addressing opioid use disorder
