Statement of Need

This activity is being held in response to mental health professionals' previous conference evaluations and the need for ongoing continuing medical education for clinicians in the area of psychiatry.

Elements of Competence

This CME activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties' areas of medical knowledge and patient care and procedural skills.

Intended Audience

This educational activity has been designed to meet the needs of clinicians and other health care professionals who are looking to enhance their knowledge and skills for the care of their patients with mental health issues.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this CE activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe gender dysphoria, including its recognition and management
  • Develop a plan to assess and manage behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia
  • Describe mechanisms of action, efficacy and side effects of the most recently approved antipsychotic medications
  • Develop a plan to assess and manage insomnia in children and adolescents

Helen C. Kales, MD
Chair and Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California Davis Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences 

Dr. Kales is a fellowship-trained, board-certified geriatric psychiatrist. She has special clinical interest in the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. Clinical Interests As a fellowship-trained, board-certified geriatric psychiatrist, Dr. Kales' research program is directly informed by her clinical work and experiences with patients, families, providers, and systems to diminish the barriers to effective and high quality care for older patients with dementia or with mental health issues. Dr. Kales has been named to numerous expert panels on dementia care, including the Lancet Global Standing Commission on Dementia Care (2015-present) and the International Psychogeriatrics Association Expert Panel on the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms in people with Alzheimer’s Disease (Co-Chair, 2015-2017). She is recognized as an international expert on dementia care, the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, depression in later life and in pharmacoepidemiological research related to the prevalence and risks of use of antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications in patients with dementia. Dr. Kales is the creator of the “DICE Approach” to manage the behavioral and functional symptoms of dementia and the “WeCareAdvisor,” a web-based tool for dementia caregivers. She has over 125 peer-reviewed publications and has been continuously federally research funded since 2004. Dr. Kales is also a tireless mentor who is currently mentoring four junior investigators with career development funding in dementia.

The Department of Psychiatry is honored to present the 2021 James "Jeff" Jefferson Memorial lecture in memory of Dr. Jefferson, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health. Speakers are chosen based on their embodiment of Jeff's spirit - being a consummate clinician, academic, and colleague while advancing the evidenced-based care of people suffering from mental illness. 

By participating in this activity learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the prevalence and negative outcomes of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD)
  2. Illustrate the efficacy of the prevalent current management of BPSD in real world settings
  3. Identify the four steps of the DICE approach to assessing and managing BPSD and apply it with your own patients
