Recognizing and Managing Suicidal Risk

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course provides interactive learning experience to explore risk factors for suicide in adults and adolescents, managing suicidal risk, and available suicide prevention resources. Participants have multiple opportunities to engage in learning by viewing a TED Talk-style presentation, working with the clinical cases and receiving immediate feedback, contributing to a discussion forum, and studying provided resources.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE

In addition to knowledge, this activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the Institute of Medicine competencies of patient-centered care, and working in interdisciplinary teams. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competencies of roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork. 

PRACTICE GAPS AND NEEDS

Recent reports indicate that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and suicide rate is increasing. Each year, more than 700 Wisconsin residents die by suicide. Healthcare professionals should be better prepared to assess suicidal risk and provide appropriate suicide prevention and referral.

Target Audience

This activity was planned by and for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, behavioral health professionals, and others who care for patients with mental health illnesses and are interested in assessing the risk factors for suicide and improving suicide prevention.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this course, members of the healthcare team will improve their collective ability to:

  1. Use best practices in recognizing and managing suicidal risk.
  2. Assess the risk factors for suicide in an adults and adolescents.
  3. Discuss the relationship between substance abuse or self-injurious behavior and suicide.
  4. Identify suicide prevention resources and referrals that can be provided to patients.

Universal Activity Number (UAN)

American Board of Internal Medicine

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to [MOC point amount] Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.
