Depression Screening and Management in Primary Care
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course provides interactive learning experience to explore appropriate screening for depression, differential diagnosis of depression, and a team-based approach to managing depression in primary care. Participants have multiple opportunities to engage in learning by viewing a TED Talk-style presentation, working with the clinical cases and receiving immediate feedback, contributing to a discussion forum, and studying provided educational resources.
ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE
In addition to knowledge, this activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the Institute of Medicine competencies of patient-centered care, and working in interdisciplinary teams. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competencies of roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork.
PRACTICE GAPS AND NEEDS
Depression is very common. Primary care clinicians are well-positioned to recognize depression in patients early and to contribute to its treatment. However, estimated 20% of the patients seen in healthcare settings are depressed, but as many as half of these patients have undiagnosed depression. Further, there are many barriers to effective education of patients about depression, eliciting patient preferences for treatment, and optimal treatment of patients with major depression.
Intended Audience
This activity was planned by and for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, behavioral health professionals, and others who care for patients with mental health illnesses and are interested in exploring best practice in depression screening and management.
Learning Objectives
As a result of participation in this course, participants will improve ability to:
- Use a team-based approach to appropriately screen for depression and manage depression in primary care.
- Distinguish major depression from borderline personality disorder.
- Assess depression in young and older adults.
- Select and monitor antidepressant therapy in patients with major depression.
