Statement of Need and Purpose
The Metro Public Health Department's Continuing Education Learning Series will increase the knowledge and skills of public health practitioners addressing public health challenges within the community. The series aims to provide learning opportunities for Metro Public Health Department Nashville-Davidson County employees to gain insight on the foundational principles of public health practice. Participants can expect to learn about evidence-based strategies and tools that will support them in improving health outcomes in Nashville and Davidson County and beyond. The content will focus on the foundations of public health, impact of climate change, emergency preparedness, and workforce development.
Intended Audience
This educational series is designed to meet the needs of dentists and allied dental professionals, dieticians, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, social workers, and other public health professionals.
Global Learning Objectives
Following this learning series, members of the interprofessional public healthcare team will be able to:
- Utilize continuing education as an opportunity to develop and sustain a competent public health workforce that values and incorporates team-based care into their practice.
- Identify and apply public health core functions within their practice.
- Employ evidence-based strategies to improve population health outcomes.
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of interprofessional public health team members within the health department.
- Identify strategies to address health disparities (e.g., access, socioeconomic status, environment, institutional practices, and bias that underlie racial, ethnic, gender, and/or sexual orientation disparities in health and healthcare)
Elements of Competence
This educational activity is designed to change learner competence and focuses on the following competency areas:
- Accreditation council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Nursing: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice
- National Academy of Medicine (NAM)/Nursing: Provide Patient Person-Centered Care, Employ Evidence-Based Practice, Population Health, and Utilize Informatics
- Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE): Communication, Cultural Sensitivity, Educator, Interprofessional Collaboration, Patient-Centered Care, and Professionalism
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB): Medical Safety, Pharmacology, Pharmacy Inventory Management, Pharmacy Quality Assurance, and Verbal Communication
