Medical Expert Witnesses: Information and Requirements for SMPH Faculty - Robert D. Ebbe, JD, CPHRM

Series Overview

One hour didactic session where speakers deliver clinical, basic science and translational neurology and neuroscience related topics. Speakers include UW neurology department members, including neuropsychologists, researchers, clinical faculty, neurology residents. We also invite other UW clinicians and researchers or invited speakers from outside UW. 

Intended Audience

MD/DO, RN, APRN, Physician Assistants, Psychologists, and Students.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will increase their ability to:

  1. Analyze legal service requests for expert testimony to identify the nature of the request, the relationship to their clinical role and their obligations in terms of responding
  2. Compare the scope of a “treating provider” witness role and “independent expert” witness role evaluate a request for expert testimony
  3. Describe the typical activities an expert may be asked to serve in a legal matter in order to better interpret what is being requested and what issues they need to better define with the requesting attorney
  4. Develop an approach for how they individually/their office will make use of Risk/Legal resources available to faculty
