Implicit Bias in Healthcare

Many healthcare professionals are unaware of biases that occur in the healthcare setting.  This educational activity will review implicit bias and strategies for reducing bias in the healthcare setting.

This training is brought to you by the Division of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ADEI) at Northern Illinois University (NIU) through our partnership with UW Health Northern Illinois. The content meets Illinois license renewal requirements for Implicit Bias training.

Elements of Competence

This continuing education (CE) activity is designed to improve learner competence in the following areas:

  • National Academy of Medicine Competencies - Provide patient/person-centered care
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Engage in Self-refection, Address Health Disparities, Value Diversity in the Clinical Encounter

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, social workers.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will:

  • Identify implicit bias basics
  • Explain how implicit bias shows up in all of us
  • Review research on implicit bias in healthcare 
  • Identify behaviors you might encounter
  • Describe how implicit bias can impact the delivery of healthcare 
  • Develop strategies to prevent implicit bias  
  • Describe how to respond to and address implicit bias
  • Identify how your company wants you to report an incident

Credit can be earned by successfully completing the activity, the assessment, and the evaluation. Credit will be provided to NABP CPE Monitor within 60 days after the activity completion.

ASWB Approved Continuing Education (ACE)

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, the University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1 Cultural Competence continuing education credits.

American Academy of PAs (AAPA)

The University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 11/1/2025. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
