Injection Treatments for Orthopedic Pain-Honduras 2024

Intended Audience

This activity is designed for physicians who utilize injection treatment therapy on the mission and in their clinics. 

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to...

  1. Describe relevant anatomical features related to injection therapy
  2. Explain safety protocols and assess safety risks for injection therapy
  3. Demonstrate proper injection therapy technique
  4. Apply injection therapy protocols in mission and home clinics

Session Learning Objectives

The Basics: Supply & Safety

  1. Describe the materials used in HHPF-sponsored clinics
  2. Utilize appropriate solutions for injections

Knee

  1. Describe relevant knee anatomy for prolotherapy
  2. Explain injection techniques and protocol for prolotherapy 
  3. Identify anatomical landmarks for physical assessment and needle guidance

Clinical Skills - Knee

  1. Demonstrate injection techniques for prolotherapy in the knee
  2. Utilize palpation of anatomical landmarks for physical assessment and needle guidance

Shoulder

  1. Identify relevant shoulder anatomy for prolotherapy injections in the shoulder
  2. Identify areas of concern when doing shoulder prolotherapy

Clinical Skills - Shoulder

  1. Demonstrate proper shoulder examination
  2. Apply knowledge of shoulder anatomy to execute proper shoulder injections

Lumbar Spine

  1. Describe the anatomy of the lumbosacral area
  2. Demonstrate palpation, marking, and simulated injection techniques of appropriate structures in the lumbosacral area
  3. Utilize best practices during injection of the lumbosacral area and describe structures/areas to avoid 

Hip

  1. Describe hip and pelvic anatomy
  2. Develop palpation skills for hip and pelvis
  3. Demonstrate prolotherapy marking techniques for the hip and anterior pelvis

Clinical Skills - Hip

  1. Apply knowledge of hip anatomy to improve palpation and marking skills
  2. Discuss prolotherapy options for common hip problems
  3. Utilize hip prolotherapy injection techniques on mission and in their home clinics

Ankle/Foot

  1. Utilize best practices for ankle examination
  2. Identify impairments of the ankle 
  3. Demonstrate methods of treatment for pain related issues of the ankle

Clinical Skills - Ankle

  1. Demonstrate proper examination of the ankle/foot
  2. Utilize palpation techniques of surface anatomy in the ankle/foot
  3. Identify and properly mark relevant anatomical landmarks in the ankle/foot

Elbow/Wrist

  1. Identify anatomical landmarks for elbow and hand prolotherapy injections
  2. Describe danger zones when performing injections in elbow & hand areas
  3. Apply anatomical knowledge of the elbow and hand regions when palpating structures in these areas

Clinical Skills - Elbow/Wrist 

  1. Apply palpation skills when identifying the injections sites for the elbow and hand
  2. Discuss the common pathologies that can affect the elbow and hand
  3. Develop a step-by-step process of palpation and marking of the elbow and hand

Cervical/Thoracic Spine

  1. Review anatomy of the cervical and thoracic spine
  2. Demonstrate palpation and marking of the cervical and thoracic spine
  3. Identify the target sites for injecting the cervical and thoracic spine 

Safety & Needle Sticks

  1. Demonstrate performance of safe needle injection technique
  2. Demonstrate performance of needle stick protocols 

HHPF Policies & Logistics

  1. Assess safety risks in Honduras for their own personal safety and that of fellow participants 
  2. Explain primary needle safety steps for use in clinics to decrease potential needle-stick injuries
  3. Explain and demonstrate how to mix basic dextrose prolotherapy solutions for clinic and mission use
