OVERVIEW
This training will equip group exercise instructors with foundational information to develop and implement classes that are both inclusive of, and effective for, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Guided by Social Cognitive Theory, content will fall into the categories of disability knowledge, teaching strategies, and advocacy within the context of group exercise settings. Participants will leave the training with tools and actionable steps to enhance the group exercise experience for all of their students, but especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for group exercise instructors and fitness professionals.
ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES
As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- Illustrate lifestyle factors.
- Outline lifestyle factors surrounding intellectual and developmental disability that impact group exercise participation.
- Explain common misconceptions about disability and identify personal biases.
- Apply evidence-based techniques for teaching group exercise to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their classes.
- Improve their efficacy to teach individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Show aspects of the Americans with Disabilities Act that are relevant to group exercise participation.
ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE
This activity has been designed to change learner competence and performance, and focuses on the interprofessional competency of roles/responsibilities.
