Series Overview

Target Audience

Division of Genetics and Metabolism physicians, genetic counselors, nurses, dieticians, clinic coordinators and genetics trainees (rotating residents/medical students, medical genetic fellows, genetic counseling students), staff and students. Also, State Lab of Hygiene faculty and staff including cytogeneticists, molecular geneticists, lab directors and fellows.

Elements of Competence

In addition to knowledge, this activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American College of Medical Genetics areas of practice-based learning and improvement in medical knowledge.

Practice Gaps

The American College of Medical Genetics mission statement has been revised to include "to promote excellence in the practice of medical genetics and genomics in the integration of translational research into practice." Inclusion of the word "genomics" expands the medical genetics expected competencies, which require continual learning opportunities to achieve. This education will address the knowledge gap related to the translation of research to practice.

The knowledge gap is a direct result of the rapid increase of new diagnostic technologies and clinical findings. The pace of these advances is sufficiently great that attendance at regional or national meetings cannot meet the continuing medical education needs of medical geneticists.  Clinical case conference attendance is an accepted method of teaching and learning according to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The proposed format for case presentation reflects the overarching comptencies of the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG), which complements the proposed journal club format that emphasizes the discipline specific ACMG competencies.
