Statement of Need and Purpose

Healthcare is changing quickly, with the electronic health record (EHR) matching this rapid pace. Clinical Informaticists need to continually increase their competence and skills to build, modify, and create efficiencies within the EHR, as well as understand the implications of their decisions on clinicians and patient safety. They also need the ability to work effectively among the interprofessional team and be liaisons between information technology and clinical operations. To be effective in in this role and increase clinician satisfaction, Clinical Informaticists need to promote excellent communication among healthcare team and improve clinical workflows within the EHR.

The clinical informaticists make key decisions during electronic health record (EHR) implementation and maintenance process, and they need to understand the implications of those decisions on clinicians and patient safety. Clinical informaticists will be trained in key workflows, the language to support key tools, and how to manage the health of a patient population through reports so they can effectively serve as liaisons and builders.

This educational activity is designed to change learner competence in the following areas:

  • The American Board of Medical Specialties: Systems-based practice
  • National Academy of Medicine/Nursing: Provide patient-centered care and utilize informatics
  • Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competencies: Roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork
  • UW ICEP Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Value diversity in the clinical encounter.

Intended Audience

This program is designed to meet the needs of physician and nurse informaticists, as well as other Clinical Builders who are using EpicCare Ambulatory, EpicCare ASAP and EpicCare Inpatient in their daily practice.

Learning Objectives

Following this training, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate skills to improve clinical workflows and increase clinician satisfaction.
  • Describe strategies to increase effectiveness as a liaison between IT and operations.
  • Explain the value and evolving role of the clinical informaticist in maximizing communication among members of the interprofessional health care team.
