Dr. Brian Sharp completed his training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan where he spent the last two years of residency completing a Graduate Medical Education Scholars Program in Healthcare Administration, also serving as Chief Resident during his final year.
Dr. Sharp has served in numerous leadership roles within the UW Department of Emergency Medicine. This has included Assistant Clinical Service Chief for the UW Division of Emergency Medicine, the Director of Quality for the UW Department of Emergency Medicine, Associate Program Director for the UW Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Medical Director of Emergency Services at UW Health at the American Center, and most recently, Associate Vice Chair of Quality for the UW Department of Emergency Medicine.
In February 2020, Dr. Sharp accepted the position of UW Health Patient Safety Officer – now expanded to Medical Director of Patient Safety & Quality – in which he serves as the physician leader responsible for UW Health’s patient safety and quality efforts. In this role, he aims to improve patient safety as the health system strives for zero patient harm, as well as closely collaborating with the patient relations team in addressing patient and families concerns about quality and safety of care.
He has previously served as chair of the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety section of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and currently serves on the Quality and Patient Safety Committee within ACEP. He also currently serves as President of ACEP’s chapter and as a Councilor to ACEP’s national body.
His areas of interest include quality improvement and patient safety, patient experience, provider wellness, and medical education.
