You asked for more pediatric education.
We heard you. And we are delivering.
Some pediatric patients do not present with a clear story.
The injuries may be subtle. The history may not match. The scene may feel off without an obvious reason why.
In these moments, recognition is not just clinical.
It is observational. It is behavioral. It is situational.
Non-accidental trauma is one of the most challenging realities in pediatric care. It carries medical, legal, and emotional weight, and it often depends on the ability of the prehospital provider to recognize early signs that something is wrong.
This session focuses on identifying concerning patterns in pediatric patients where abuse may be a possibility. It explores how to assess injuries in context, how to interpret discrepancies between presentation and reported history, and how scene dynamics and caregiver interaction contribute to clinical suspicion.
The emphasis is on field awareness and decision making. What to look for. What to document. When to escalate concern. How early recognition and communication influence patient safety, protection, and downstream system response.
Using real-world perspective and case-based discussion, this session supports EMS providers in approaching these complex situations with clarity, professionalism, and patient-centered care.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Norell Rosado as our guest speaker for this session!

Dr. Rosado is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician at UW Health and faculty with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Dr. Rosado brings practical insight from frontline pediatric emergency care and child protection, with a focus on recognizing non-accidental trauma and supporting appropriate system response.
