Education Essentials - Planning HOW to Teach: Effective Learning Strategies

Welcome! In this module we connect the learning objectives to the learning activities or how you will teach content in a session and provide examples. We dive into the educational concepts of active learning, chunking, sequencing, scaffolding, retrieval practice, and the importance of avoiding cognitive overload to keep your learners engaged and learning effectively. We provide tools and examples for organizing your teaching sessions.

This module is part of UWSMPH Office of Faculty Affairs and Development’s Education Essentials online modular curriculum: a collection of modules aimed at developing foundational skills important for all teachers—across professions, specialties, and settings in health science education. The goal is to support all health science teachers to Reflect, Learn, Plan, and Practice to deepen expertise in an ongoing cycle and grow our UWSMPH educator community.

This continuing education (CE) activity is designed to improve learner competence in the following areas:

Intended Audience

The Essentials in Education Module Series is intended for interprofessional health science faculty and staff who are interested in growing their skills and knowledge in the domains of teaching and learning.  Some examples may not align with your specific professional learning climate, though all can be adapted to your and your learners’ contexts.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational activity participants will:

  1. Connect the learning activities (Step 2) to learning objectives (Step 1) in the Learning Design Triangle when planning HOW to teach.
  2. Describe learning activities and examples of different types
  3. Describe active learning, 3 examples of how to employ active learning, and 1 new active learning strategy you will employ in your future teaching.
  4. Define the educational strategies of chunking, scaffolding, sequencing, retrieval practice, and avoiding cognitive overload to keep learners engaged and learning effectively.
  5. Review teaching plan template/s to plan HOW to teach an effective and well-paced session.
