MARCH 14 PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

As a result of participation in this educational series, members of the healthcare team will:

  • Discuss potential causes of loss of developmental skills in a person with Down syndrome
  • Identify the symptoms of Down Syndrome Regression Disorder and the recommended diagnostic workup 
  • Present treatment approaches that may help the individual with DSRD

OVERVIEW

The Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group-USA (DSMIG-USA®) Speaker Series consists of webinars and enduring materials designed to share knowledge and experience related to the care of children and adults with Down syndrome, and clinical research related to Down syndrome. The intended audience includes primary care physicians, specialty physicians, advanced practice providers, psychologists, dietitians, occupational and physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, genetic counselors, research scientists, residents, and trainees. The education includes live webinars that will be recorded and posted later as enduring materials. There will be a separate registration for the enduring programs.

STATEMENT OF NEED

The recommendations for medical care for individuals with Down syndrome is constantly evolving. Although current health supervision guidelines exist, there are large gaps in the knowledge about optimal care practices. Training in caring for individuals with Down syndrome is often limited in medical schools and residency programs. Health care providers with in-depth knowledge about caring for individuals with Down syndrome are limited in number and providing an opportunity for those experts to share their knowledge can be beneficial to others caring for people with Down syndrome.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This educational activity is intended for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, advanced practice providers, psychologists, dietitians, occupational and physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, genetic counselors, research scientists, residents, and trainees.

SERIES OBJECTIVES

As a result of participation in this educational series, members of the healthcare team will:

  • Identify best practice management strategies for individuals with Down syndrome and their caregivers
  • Recognize and discuss trends, with interprofessional colleagues, in care for people with Down syndrome
  • Formulate best practice care plans with interprofessional colleagues to incorporate into their practice

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE

This activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, and practice-based learning and improvement, in addition to the interprofessional competencies of roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork.

PROGRAM NAME: DOWN SYNDROME REGRESSION: PART 1

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Individuals with Down syndrome may experience regression in previously acquired skills. This two-part webinar will present panel discussions on regression, with a key focus on Down Syndrome Regression Disorder (DSRD). This condition occurs most commonly between the ages of 10 and 30 years and is associated with loss of skills in language, cognition, behavior, motor and adaptive skills. Discussion will include what we currently know about DSRD diagnosis and management.
