As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners as members of the healthcare team will:

  • Identify early and late signs of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia in students.
  • Demonstrate appropriate initial management and reassessment of common diabetes emergencies in the school setting, including rapid acting therapies like glucagon and fast-acting carbs.
  • Differentiate which presentations require immediate escalation of care either through EMS or alternate transportation.
  • Describe the scope of diabetes emergency interventions available at different EMS levels (BLS vs. ALS).
  • Apply emergency medicine decision-making to school-based scenarios by prioritizing interventions, communicating with caregivers/EMS, and determining when it is safe to return to class vs. seeking to higher care.
