Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will increase their ability to:

  1. Identify at least five common hazardous materials (such as anhydrous ammonia, chlorine, and gasoline), frequently transported by rail and highway in Wisconsin, and match each to its associated placard and safety considerations.
  2. Describe the key components of the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) and demonstrate its use to obtain initial isolation distances and protective actions for a given material based on its identification number or name.
  3. Differentiate between levels of personal protective equipment (PPE) and explain the circumstances for their use, including the process for establishing a “hot zone” and a “cold zone” to maintain scene safety.
  4. Develop a safe initial approach to a hazardous materials incident by identifying scene hazards, interpreting the NFPA diamond and placards to guide early decisions, and communicating an initial report to request appropriate resources.
  5. Summarize the immediate patient care priorities for a victim of toxic exposure, including performing rapid decontamination, stabilizing the patient according to protocol, and providing an accurate transfer report to the receiving facility.
