Technology and Social Media during community-wide emergencies 2022

For years, pediatricians and other healthcare professionals have cautioned against too much screen time for children and adolescents. School closings and the pivot to virtual learning resulted in a significant increase in technology usage for learning and social connection. This course explores age-specific recommendations and tools to help families manage technology use especially during times when in-person connections are less accessible.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this educational activity, learners will be able to:

  1. State technology recommendations for different ages.
  2. List at least one benefit and one downside of technology use in children.
  3. Describe where to incorporate technology screening questions into social history.
  4. Create a media use plan to help patients and families.

Paula Cody, MD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and the Medical Director and Section Head of Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Cody earned her medical degree, and completed her residency and adolescent medicine fellowship from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Cody is board certified in adolescent medicine and pediatrics. She works with adolescents and young adults with a special interest in eating disorders, sexuality and reproductive health, menstrual disorders, and high-risk behaviors.
