The Safety and Efficacy of Perioperative Vasopressor Use - Lucas Skoda, DO

Intended Audience

Clinical anesthesia providers in the Department of Anesthesiology, which includes both faculty physicians (MD, DO) as well as residents or fellows in training, RNs, and clinical anesthetists, comprise the target audience. Other specialties who would benefit from attending include PA, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and students.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate efficacy of norepinephrine and phenylephrine in patients undergoing general anesthesia.
  2. Assess current literature defining the risk of extravasation of peripherally infused vasopressor medications.
  3. Define the historical context that led to hesitancy over peripheral norepinephrine administration.
  4. Propose a target patient population for the use of peripherally infused norepinephrine.
  5. Discuss UW Health guidelines for peripheral infusions of vasoactive medications.
