Intended Audience

Medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, primary care physicians, RN’s, oncology nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical research associates, and other health care professionals involved in cancer care.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this educational regularly scheduled series, learners as members of the healthcare team will be able to:

  1. Identify the difference between vertical sectioning and en face sectioning of resected tissue and the value of each tissue processing method.
  2. Outline opportunities to optimize surgical management of locally aggressive skin cancers by peripheral and deep en face margin assessment (PDEMA).
  3. Summarize how to resect tissue, subdivide tissue, ink tissue and transport tissue to make PDEMA feasible in the operating room setting.
  4. Explain how to draw maps, communicate with your pathologist, and identify residual positive tumor foci for subsequent resections.
