Phlebology Treatment in Honduras 2024
Overview
Care of the patient with debilitating venous disease is common in both the United States and in developing settings. This activity will offer education related to the care of patients with this diagnosis by using safe, effective and economical methods of sclerotherapy. Since 1969, the Hackett Hemwall Patterson Foundation has been conducting annual service-learning missions to Honduras to both reduce pain and suffering caused by venous disease, as well as to provide hands-on preceptorship training that is indispensable to learning vein sclerosis.
Intended Audience
This educational activity has been designed to meet the needs of physicians who manage patients with venous disease.
Learning Objectives
As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will:
- Assess leg ulcers for the venous contribution of the pathology
- Describe venous anatomy and the lymphatic relationship to vein
- Explain and apply different treatment modalities, including foam sclerotherapy, in venous treatments
- Discuss ultrasound of the leg anatomy and use of ultrasound in venous disease treatments
Elements of Competence
This continuing education activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, in addition to the interprofessional competencies of values/ethics for interprofessional practice, and communication for interprofessional communication.
