The Neuroscience of Psychedelics: Therapeutic Mechanisms and Implications for Understanding Consciousness - Matthew Banks, PhD

Intended Audience

The target audiences for this activity are clinical anesthesia providers in the Department of Anesthesiology, which includes both faculty physicians (MD, DO) as well as residents or fellows in training, and RNs. Other specialties who would benefit from attending include PA, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, students, and clinical anesthetists.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will:

  1. Outline the evidence that psychedelics such as psilocybin ameliorate symptoms of depression and anxiety in patients.
  2. Identify the inherent limitations of randomized clinical trials focused on the therapeutic effects of psychedelics.
  3. Explain the role of neural plasticity in the mechanisms of long-term behavioral effects of psychedelics.
  4. Explain the role of changes in brain entropy in the mechanisms of long-term behavioral effects of psychedelics.
