Course Overview

The purpose of this training is to provide physician builders with the following information:

  • How are navigators constructed? How can a Physician Builder optimize the navigator for a group?
  • What logic is used to assign a navigator? How does the workflow engine rule assign navigators and control Epic menus?
  • What is the EpicCare profile and what are the top 20 things Physician Builders want to set there?
  • What are reports and print groups and how can a Physician Builder use them to create specialty-specific views that consolidate critical patient information on one screen?
  • Where and how can Documentation Flowsheets be used to capture important clinical data during patient visits? How are these flowsheets built?
  • What are some of the advanced SmartForm functions? How can Physician Builders create custom procedure SmartForms?

Elements of Competence

This CME activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties area of systems-based practice.

Statement of Need and Purpose

The purpose of this training is to show physicians who use Epic’s electronic medical record how to configure the software to accommodate patient workflows in specialty and subspecialty areas. Specifically, the courses will show physicians how to create custom documentation and ordering tools.

Intended Audience

This program is intended for physicians in specialty and sub-specialty areas using the Epic EMR in their daily practice.

Learning Objectives

Following this training the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the variety of tools available to document in the EMR and how to evaluate which tool is best for which clinical need.
  • Describe how to construct and modify SmartTexts, SmartLists, Documentation Flowsheets, SmartForms, SmartSets, Order Groups and Preference lists.
  • List the top ways individual clinicians can customize the EMR to be more efficient.
