Statement of Need and Purpose
Healthcare is changing quickly with the electronic health record (EHR) matching this rapid pace. Clinical Builders need foundational knowledge and skills to competently build, modify, create efficiencies within the EHR, as well as understand the implications of their decisions on clinicians and patient safety.
The purpose of this course is to show Clinical Builders who use Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) how to configure the software to accommodate patient workflows in general and specialty areas. Specifically, the course will show how to build tools that are most foundational to EHRs such as the structure of data, clinical notes, and ordering tools.
Elements of Competence
This CE activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the Institute of Medicine areas of utilizing informatics and the Interprofessional and Nursing areas of roles/responsibilities and interprofessional communication.
This program is designed to meet the needs of nurses and advance practice nurses, as well as other Clinical Builders who have interest in acquiring foundational competence in Epic's EHR.
Following this course, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the variety of tools available to document in the EMR and how to evaluate which tool is best for which clinical need.
- Explain how to construct and modify SmartTexts, SmartLists, SmartSets, and Order Groups.
- Describe how standardizing the approach to ordering workflows enhances clinical staff productivity and has the potential to increase clinician satisfaction and patient safety.
