This series of WeTALK workshops are planned and intended for staff at the Madison VA Hospital

WeTALK is an interactive specialty-specific simulation that teaches effective ways of communicating with patients about serious illness. It is a personalized, resource intense, learner-centered education approach with proven effectiveness in changing behaviors.

Intended Audience

This activity has been planned for an interprofessional audience of VA clinicians, including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and pharmacists interested in improving their communications skills to benefit veterans with serious illness.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the differences between cognitive and emotional responses.
  2. Define the five types of empathic responses that can be used to respond to emotion.
  3. Employ empathic responses in simulated encounters with veterans or family members in order to demonstrate the ability to respond to emotions.
  4. Describe the framework for, then practice, goals of care conversations with simulated veterans and/or family members.
  5. Use close listening and nonverbal communication skills to develop closer collaborative relationships with fellow clinicians.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

Requests for cancellation must be submitted in writing to help@icep.wisc.edu. Cancellation requests received at least 2 weeks prior to the conference will allow a full refund except for the $50 nonrefundable processing fee. No refunds will be made for cancellations received less than 2 weeks hours prior to the activity start date.
