Trauma Refresher Course 2024
The purpose of this course is a refresher to quality trauma care; Trauma assessments, trauma interventions, trauma imaging interruptions, trauma related medications and reversal drugs.
Practice Gap and Needs
UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital is an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Level II Trauma Center. As a Level II trauma center, the emergency department physicians and surgeons are required to obtain 10 hours of trauma related Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit per year to perform procedures safely and remain current with trauma care and management. Through quality reviews, this course was designed for the trauma response team to attend as yearly education for quality trauma care.
Elements of Competence
This educational activity is designed to change learner competence and focuses on the following competencies:
- Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Nursing: Patient care and procedural skills and systems-based practice
- Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competencies: Interprofessional Communication
Intended Audience
Physicians, advance practice nurses, physician assistants, nurses, and pharmacists.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this activity, participants, as members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- Identify common life-threatening imaging findings in patients with blunt or penetrating trauma.
- Describe common IR interventions in the setting of recent trauma.
- Review the algorithm for management and treatment of Traumatically injured patients.
- Describe what triage is and demonstrate how the decision process might work.
- Define shock, some of its subtypes and its treatments.
- Find examples of threats to life that should be treated emergently/urgently in trauma patients.
- Review evaluation and treatment of hemorrhage.
- Review the Glascow coma score and how it helps guide head injury management.
- Differentiate between non-major and major types of bleeds.
