Practice Gaps and Needs

As orthopaedic surgical options for treating the foot and ankle become more complex, the rapidly expanding publication of papers, updates on the current and evolving standards of care, and new approaches, is needed. Learners need strategies for addressing and determining appropriate treatment options for patients with ankle arthritis for today and the future. Additionally, new information must provide learners with indications for primary fixation or fusion in lisfranc injuries and surgical strategies for sesamoid injuries. This event will address gaps in resident education in advanced techniques and indications in total ankle arthroplasty. The learner will also be provided insights in national and international Sports Medicine topics in Foot & Ankle.

Attendance at this educational activity is strongly encouraged for all faculty in the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation. Fellows and residents who are currently training within the department are required to attend. Planners for the event will communicate to potential registrants that attendance at this activity serves to provide them with high-yield best practices for foot and ankle orthopedic surgery, thus better equipping them to incorporate this knowledge into their practice. Also, we will communicate to learners that strategies for managing patient comorbidities and other patient-related barriers will be discussed so these barriers can be more easily overcome. References from presentations will be shared.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, physician assistants, and nurses.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational series, members of the healthcare team will improve ability to…

  • Recall indications for primary fixation or fusion in lisfranc injuries
  • Outline surgical strategies for sesamoid injuries
  • Outline strategies for efficiencies in the Orthopedic operating room
  • Evaluate assumptions and biases about patients presenting with ankle arthritis and appropriate medical and surgical decision-making
