2023 UW Orthopedic Surgery Fall Alumni Visiting Professor Lectureship
This inaugural one-day educational forum will consist of lectures and panel discussions that cover a variety of orthopedic surgery sub-specialties. Our presenters will feature current faculty and alumni of the orthopedic surgery training programs, with Drs. Wayne Gersoff and Ryan Muchow serving as our distinguished guests. The topics will include relevant clinical information to improve individual practices and patient care, professional development, and highlight the current orthopedic surgery residency and fellowships at the University of Wisconsin. There will be time for networking with colleagues and catching up with the UW faculty.

Practice Gaps and Needs
Strategies for addressing complex pediatric fractures, hip preservation, periprosthetic fractures, hand injuries and conditions, complex and basic spinal conditions, and Achilles tendon injuries. Strategies for new or updated methods to address professional development in residency education. Anticipated barriers would be potential resistance to change in current teaching/administrative practices already in use in the department programs.
We will provide lectures and panel discussions to address possible changes/updates to current practices and use Q&A with audience members to discuss the benefits of these potential changes or updates.
Intended Audience
Orthopedic physicians, residents, fellows, students, physician assistants, athletic trainers, and nurses.
Learning Objectives
As a result of participation in this activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to
- Utilize evidence-based evaluation and management strategies to initiate care - or transfer of care- of complex orthopedic conditions, such as complex pediatric fractures, hip preservation, periprosthetic fractures, hand injuries and conditions, complex and basic spinal conditions, and Achilles tendon injuries.
- Examine the changing dynamics and delivery of care as an orthopedic surgeon as patient populations and access to sufficient health care change based on current societal factors.
- Identify new approaches to orthopedic surgery residency and fellowship training from other surgical education training specialists in the field and incorporate these into the department’s current training programs.

Visiting Professor
Wayne Gersoff, MD
Dr. Wayne Gersoff recognized his desire to enter a career in medicine, and, in particular, surgery, at an early stage in his education. Orthopedic surgery provided a unique blend of science, biomechanics, and technical skills as a mechanism to help people. This, coupled with his life-long participation in and love of sports, drew him to a career in orthopedic sports medicine. Following his academic years at Yale University and the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Gersoff was recruited to the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1987 to develop and direct a program in sports medicine, as well as serve as a team physician for the University of Colorado athletic teams. During his career, he has continued to be actively involved in sports medicine and has served as a team physician for the Colorado Rockies baseball team, the Denver Grizzlies hockey team, the U.S. Ski Jumping team, the U.S. Soccer Team, and the Denver Public Schools. He presently serves as team physician for the Colorado Rapids professional soccer team and has been the President of the Professional Soccer Physicians’ Society for ten years.
Dr. Gersoff is also recognized as a leader both on a national and international level for his experience in meniscal allograft transplantation, articular cartilage restoration, and the biological restoration of the knee joint. He has lectured on these topics at major medical meetings in the USA and abroad. In addition, he has edited and contributed to two textbooks: Cartilage Surgery – An Operative Manual and Mensical Transplantation: A Comprehensive Review, as well as multiple journal publications.
Ryan Muchow, MD
Dr. Muchow graduated with distinction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he remained to earn his medical degree. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Muchow specialized in pediatric orthopaedics after completing a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic and spine surgery at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. He joined the medical staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children and the orthopedic surgery department at the University of Kentucky in 2012. He has served as the Program Director for the UK Orthopaedic Surgery Residency since 2018.
Dr. Muchow is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, Scoliosis Research Society, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association. His areas of interest include general pediatric orthopaedics, adolescent hip preservation surgery, scoliosis, and trauma. He is currently involved in research pertaining to trauma, scoliosis, resident education and hip pathology.
