2022 UW Orthopedic Surgery Fall Visiting Professor Lectureship

Madison, WI US
October 21, 2022

This one day educational forum will consist of lectures and panel discussions by key leaders in pediatric orthopaedics from around the country. This WILL NOT be a lectureship that is composed of material that focuses on the science of pediatric orthopaedics. In contrast, this lectureship will cover topics that are important to all healthcare providers. Some of the relevant material will include lectures and perspectives on "Work/Life Balance"; Mitigating System Contributions to Burnout; How to Excel at Research; Identifying Surgical Waste; Strategies to Become Culturally Competent; and Surgical Coaching. A highlight will be a "Job Fair" where trainees will learn How to Excel in Fellowship, How to Find a Good Job and How to Successfully Negotiate Employment Contracts. The event will close with a Perspective on How to Provide Value to All Around You.

Practice Gaps and Needs

High rates of burnout and professional dissatisfaction exist for health care providers and it can be difficult to balance the value that providers have on patient care with the personal costs of such a demanding job. Another important gap is for learners to develop skills in post-residency training and and job seeking in order to address causes of burnout prior to starting new career or educational program. Attendees will become skilled in prioritizing advancements in orthopaedics and how to incorporate them in their practice. Also, attendees will receive strategies to become skilled in maximizing their clinical skills and operative techniques to advance the field of orthopaedics.

Through lectures, panel and case-based discussions, learners will learn strategies for balancing work with personal lives in a culturally competent manner.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians and physician assistants.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to

  1. List strategies to secure successful job placement
  2. Identify personal and system cause of provider burnout
  3. Evaluate their own biases to become more culturally competent
