2022 PATCH Symposium: Best Practices in Adolescent Health
Join us IN-PERSON for the 2022 PATCH Symposium
The PATCH Symposium is a one-of-a-kind opportunity in which health care professionals and young people (ages 12-21) from across Wisconsin will join TOGETHER to learn, share, and grow as adolescent health champions and advocates!
The 2022 PATCH Symposium is one of our many efforts to improve the way adolescents receive and experience health care in our state. This event will bring health care professionals AND young people together to: engage in authentic and meaningful conversations about the quality of Wisconsin adolescent health care services; explore misunderstandings and missed opportunities for prevention and health promotion in adolescent health services; and enhance adolescent health by fostering awareness and activism. This unconventional and innovative learning opportunity challenges traditional roles - providing space for young people to be the experts. After all, who could be more qualified to talk about the needs and desires of teens in health care settings?
PRACTICE GAPS AND NEEDS
Health care transition for youth and young adults is a priority for many U.S. health care and public health entities. There is a significant impact on individuals, as well as systems at large, when a structured and intentional transition process from pediatric to adult health care is not integrated into routine care. Youth and young adults are more likely to disengage, delay, or inappropriately use health services into adulthood resulting in poorer health outcomes and higher costs.
Providers need knowledge about the concerns, preferences, and realities of young people in in health care settings. They also need confidence and skills to communicate effectively and build relationships with teens. In addition, providers need the ability to advocacy for and effectively communicate about appropriate youth-friendly health care services among the health care team.
