2022 Cardiovascular Medicine and Prevention Update for Primary Care - Enduring Content

About this course:

Cardiovascular medicine is a vast area of clinical practice with continually evolving and developing research, guidelines, best practices, and new medications and technology. Primary care providers are challenged to optimally manage a multitude of diseases involving the cardiovascular system including the failing heart, the heart with abnormal arrhythmias and the circulation affected by abnormal cholesterol metabolism and hypertension. National guidelines helping clinicians establish best practices are refined annually. Implications of new guidelines, new medications and their utilization will be discussed in addition to a review of best practices on several topics commonly seen by primary care providers.

The implications of ambulatory monitor test results in symptomatic patients will be addressed. We will focus on updated measures including management of hypertension in the elderly, management of side effects of statins and the use of integrative techniques for patients with cardiovascular disease. Several new drugs that might improve outcomes for patients with heart failure will be presented and put into perspective for all types of heart failure. Difficult issues surrounding when to stop treating severe end stage heart failure will be discussed. Tips on appropriate use of anticoagulation will also be presented.

Accurate diagnosis and treatment of cardiac causes of syncope and postural hypotension are a common problem for primary care physicians and advanced practice providers. Updated treatment information will be discussed. Breakout sessions will provide focused discussion on common problems such as interpreting incidental findings from coronary CT scans, preoperative assessment for cardiac risk, and medication adherence for chronic therapy. Additionally, we will address the role of closure devices for stroke prevention and update clinicians on long term cardiac effects of COVID.

Intended Audience

This activity is planned by and designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses and other allied health personnel working in the field of primary care who treat and evaluate patients in need of prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Elements of Competence

This CE activity has been designed to improve learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties' areas of patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, and interprofessional and communication skills.

This activity focuses on the Interprofessional competencies of roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams/teamwork.

This activity also focuses on the Center for Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE) competency of interprofessional collaboration.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the activity, the healthcare team will be able to:

  1. Identify best practices for the treatment of hypertension in the elderly and best practices for medication adherence and best practices for dealing with side effects of statins.
  2. Discuss implications of incidental findings on CT scans
  3. Assess the implications of new treatments for heart failure.
  4. Summarize best practices for stroke prevention including anticoagulation and device placement.
  5. Outline new and evolving information on the role of SGLT2 inhibitors for heart failure.
  6. Discuss implications of symptoms of palpitations and hypotension.
  7. Examine current and evolving data and research pertaining to COVID in cardiovascular medicine.
  8. Outline best practices for use of palliative care and evaluation of cardiac risk prior to non-cardiac surgery.
  9. Define the role of integrative medicine in patients with heart disease.
