UW Health Northern Illinois: Equipped to be Remarkable: Trauma Symposium (2026)

Rockford, IL US
January 29, 2026

Overview

UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital is an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) designated Level II Trauma Center. As part of maintaining trauma center designation, emergency department physicians, surgeons, and the trauma response team are required to obtain a minimum of 10 hours of trauma-related Continuing Medical Education (CME) per year to ensure safe, evidence-based procedural performance and adherence to current trauma care standards. Through ongoing trauma registry reviews, morbidity and mortality conferences, and performance improvement processes, several educational gaps have been identified. These include variable familiarity with mass casualty protocols, inconsistent application of reversal and antifibrinolytic therapies (e.g., TXA), evolving best practices in geriatric trauma management, and the need for deeper understanding of complex hematologic emergencies such as Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). Additionally, trauma professionals require enhanced preparedness for nontraditional trauma scenarios (“Backyard Trauma”), greater awareness of human trafficking recognition and response, and improved coordination with organ and tissue donation services following critical injury or death. This multidisciplinary conference was designed to address these identified gaps through evidence-based updates, interactive case studies, and practical learning designed to enhance clinical competence, interprofessional collaboration, and patient outcomes across the continuum of trauma care.

Elements of Competence

This educational activity is designed to change learner competence and focuses on the following competencies:

  • Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Nursing: Patient care and procedural skills and systems-based practice
  • Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competencies: Interprofessional Communication

Intended Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, advance practice nurses, physician assistants, nurses, and pharmacists.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this activity, participants, as members of the healthcare team will be able to:

  1. Apply current trauma management protocols for civilian mass casualty incidents and improve coordination among emergency, surgical, and support personnel.
  2. Utilize resourceful, adaptive problem-solving strategies (“Stranger Things or MacGyver’s Toolbox”) to provide effective trauma care in limited-resource or unconventional settings.
  3. Recognize and manage common mechanisms of injury encountered in community (“Backyard”) trauma, emphasizing rapid assessment and evidence-based intervention.
  4. Appropriately administer and monitor reversal agents and Tranexamic Acid (TXA) according to current trauma and hematology guidelines for optimal management of coagulopathy and hemorrhage.
  5. Identify potential victims of human trafficking in emergency and inpatient settings and apply validated screening tools and response protocols to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance.
  6. Implement geriatric trauma best practices, accounting for frailty, polypharmacy, comorbidities, and unique physiological considerations in older adult patients.
  7. Diagnose and manage Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) in trauma and hematology-oncology settings using current diagnostic criteria and evidence-based treatment approaches.
  8. Describe best practices in the management of burn trauma, including fluid resuscitation, wound care, infection prevention, and criteria for transfer to specialized burn centers.
  9. Coordinate effectively with UW Organ and Tissue Donation services to ensure ethical, timely, and compassionate facilitation of donation in appropriate trauma cases.
